Assessment plan

Every pupil has an exercise book where there will be all written tests. I will store the exercise books and they will be available to look into them when pupils or parents need. However, twice a term I will send the exercise books home and parents should have a look.

I usually correct mistakes or at least mark (underline) them, very often I add a comment to the mark. I highlight the areas or things that are positive. From time to time I will take the examples of most common mistakes to the class and let pupils find and correct the mistakes.

At the end of some lessons, pupils will fill in and hand in exit cards. It will teach pupils self-assessment and it helps me to assess our mutual work. I will also use features of a portfolio for the same reasons.

By all assessment I will use plus and minus, I just don’t feel that 5marks are enough. However, I will write it only to my notebook. I believe that it is better for pupils and I will count them at the end of the term by final decision making. At the end of the term I will always erase one worst mark.

My final decision will be based on marks from written test, oral testing, activity in the classroom and on the progress the pupil will make.

  • Unit tests – at the end of a unit there will be a rather big test. I will compile the test on interactive CD attached to the textbook. For those who has specific learning difficulties I make much a shorter version. The exercises are here very easy – pictures, connecting, gab filling – that I don’t feel I need to adjust the content.
  • Quick small tests – these little tests will be announced ahead. There will be four sentences or items. A little mistake does not change the mark, however for a big mistake a grade down.
  • Vocabulary tests – 10 items based on units 1A, 1B,..  – from Czech to English. 10-9=1; 8-7=2;6-4=3;3-2=4;1-0=5. Pupils with specific learning difficulties can get a version from English to Czech but they also have a chance to speak to me right after the test. I will test them also orally and I will count the results together.
  • Projects – pupils will work on many projects during the year both individually or in groups. I use only three marks here because I want to encourage everyone to work on their projects. 1 for handing in a project which is OK, 3 for a project which was obviously shoddily made. 5 for not handing it at all. 5 can be always corrected but there will be two marks then because I do not wipe 5.
  • Attendance on recitation competition – it is an extra activity which will be awarded by 1 and a teacher’s citation.
  • Theatre performance – it is also an extra activity that will require a lot of pupils’ time, they will get 1 in both terms.
  • Extra activity in the lesson – I will appreciate when pupils show unexpected effort. They will get little 1.
  • There will also be other activities like send me an e-mail, watch a series and answer the questions, …

Evaluation:

1: till 90%

2: till 75%

3: till 45%

4: till 25%

5: less than 25%

  • Oral examination – at least once in a term I will talk to every pupil. We will have discussion on topics the pupil is interested in. I won’t disturb the fluence by correcting mistakes. I will tell the pupil about serious mistakes at the end. I will be very encouraging in assessment. I would like to motivate them to speak not the other way around. So here it would be the most important the effort and progress.
  • Pupils will have a few prepared dialogues during the year. I will assess pronunciation, fluency and the dialogue itself (structure, vocabulary,).
  • Sometimes I will test orally vocabulary, new structures or just communication during the lesson. I will try to give them only positive feedback to encourage them to speak and communicate.

I will use exit cards for ongoing assessment of pupils’ progress and as well for assessment of the course. Twice a year I will ask for pupils’ feedback. They will write to me anonymously if they want. They will assess the course. They can also give me ideas and suggestions how to get better. I will also invite my colleagues into the classroom to observe my lessons and then we will discuss the lessons.
