5th newcomers

5th class (there are a few new pupils from another school coming into the class)

Aims: Pupils will remember new pupils’ names. The new pupils will know my name and they will know that we speak English as much as possible in lessons.

Materials: paper for making a paper airplane

Procedure:

  1. Introduction – speak in English, say hello, how are you?, I introduce myself.

3minutes

  1. Asking names – using a ball, throw the ball ask about the name, then say nice to meet you and ask somebody else, pupils are supposed to use the whole sentence.

5 minutes

  1. Name impulse – activity in a circle, ask pupils about their names one after another in a circle in one direction, then tell them that they are going to tell their own names again but this time for time, use a stopwatch on your mobile, once or twice, then try it in another direction and the last is going to be a competition, I start with my name and both pupils on my sides start, who will end first, win! So everyone wins.

10-15 minutes

  1. Act out your names - Get the group in the circle. · One person will start. · They have to think of an animal or action that begins with the first letter of their name. · Then you have to perform the action or animal and then say the action you have done and your name. E.g. Swimming Sam so Sam would act out that she was swimming them says swimming Sam. · Then it would be the next persons turn so they would have to do Sams action first. · Then do their own. · Keep going until everyone has been and it will end up being the last person who has to do everyone’s actions and say everyone’s names. · When you have finished you could change direction and get them to think about new ones to use.

10-15 minutes

  1. Conclusion – revise the names, ask about your name and then say goodbye.

Extension

Paper Airplane - Everyone makes a paper airplane and writes their name and two questions to ask someone else. Everyone throws their airplane around the room, picks up others’ airplanes, and keeps throwing them. The leader says stop after one or two minutes. Everyone must have one paper airplane. They must find the owner of the airplane they have and answer the questions on the airplane. Each person then introduces the owner of the airplane. 10-20 minutes

Assessment

the game name impulse was very difficult for me to explain in English even though the game is very simple. I had to use Czech. There was not any time for extension because the activity with acting took a lot more time. However, I think it was a successful lesson for getting to know each other.
