Introduction
Pupils get worksheet 1, it is a word search. Pupils are supposed to find words and reveal what they have in common. Then pupils will check together what they have found. I will explain that even though it is not Christmas time we are going to listen to a Christmas song and I will tell them why at the end of the class. |
Procedure
1 Pre-listening |
Pupils will split up into groups of 4-5. They will get cards - worksheet 2 - there will be parts of sentences from the song. Everyone in the group will take one. They will listen to the short part of the song and they will have to stand in the order of the lyrics. They will make sentences – questions. After listening each of them will read their cards and the rest will check if pupils created a right sentence. In the same groups they will have to create one more example question beginning with the same two first cards (Are you…, Does he,…Does it…, Do the fairies). Then we check it together. |
2 Listening |
Worksheet 3 – pupils will listen to the song and choose the right word. Pupils will check it by listening and watching the song with lyrics then we will discuss unknown vocabulary. |
3 Post-listening |
Pupils will work again in the groups of 4-5. Their task will be to write their own lyrics to the song (just the first stanza) beginning with: Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall? Then they will read it aloud. At the end I will tell them that it is a song by Slade which was one of my father’s favourite group and I also tell some facts about the group. Next time I would like to hear a song which parents of my pupils were listening to when they were young and they will have to speak about it for 1minute (this lesson would be an introduction for another project or let’s say a task for pupils). |
4 Extension |
Pupils can try to sing their stanzas with a karaoke version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd1BASq1pp8 |
5 Variation |
Instead of writing a poem they could write a Christmas story beginning with chorus. |
Assessment: When I presented this lesson plan, I revealed the task for next lessons – the project – too soon. Pupils were too much engaged in extra work and did not pay attention. I have already made the change in the lesson plan and will tell pupils almost at the end. I did not manage to do extension, we just sang the song at the end.

Worksheet 3
"Merry Xmas Everybody"
Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall?
It's the time that every Santa has a ball
Does he ride a red-nosed reindeer?
Does it ton-up on his sleigh?
Do the fairies keep him sober for a day?
[Chorus:]
So here it is, Merry Christmas
Everybody's having fun/mum
Look to the super/future now
It's only just begun
Are you waiting for the family/friends to arrive?
Are you sure you've got the room/bathroom to spare inside?
Does your granny always tell you
That the old films/songs are the best?
Then she's up and rock 'n' rolling with the rest/my chest
[Chorus:]
What will your daddy/granny do
When he sees your momma missing/kissing Santa Clause?
Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall?
Are you hoping that the show/snow will start to fall?
Do you ride on down/up the hillside
In a buggy you have made?
When you land upon your head
Then you've been "Slade" (slayed)
[Chorus:]2x
So here it is, Merry Christmas "Merry Xmas Everybody"
