Topic: reading activities

Aims: Pupils will be able to discuss about a trailer with their mates. Pupils will be able use new vocabulary from the reading.

Age group: lower secondary

Level: A2

Time: 45+

Introduction: The teacher will show the cover of the book 13reasons why – the title will be hidden. Pupils will discuss the possible content or topic in pairs first. After that they will share the ideas with others.

Procedure:

  1. Pre reading activity: Pupils will watch the official trailer by Netflix production for the series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itgYAYrJCU8 After the first listening they will share discuss the main topic. The teacher will play it again with English subtitles this time. Pupils will have to focus on possible reasons why Hannah killed herself. Pupils will discuss it in pairs first. Later pupils will compare the ideas with others.
  2. While reading activity: Pupils will get the part of the reading. They will read and in the same time listen to it.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4s99f0BeEFg 5:43 – 7:55. After the listening they will have to work with the text. In the text there are highlighted some words, that are connected to the topic or could be unknown and useful for pupils. In worksheet 1 there are definition of these words. Pupils are supposed to match the words to the right definition. After that they will check it together and discuss other unknown words if necessary.
  3. Post reading activity: version A: Pupils will watch a video (probably with English subtitles) where parents watch the series and comment and react on what they see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5IKHrpXXoo (4 mins) After watching if the pupils are willing to speak about the reactions and opinions of parents, they could discuss it. However, I suppose that this is a very serious topic, so they could rather act the reactions – drama activity. 1-2-3 freeze. At first in pairs and if they won’t be ashamed together.

Version B: pupils will write their own story with the new set of vocabulary.

 

 

 

Assessment: The plan misses some relaxing activity. Pupils have to pay attention and listen or talk the whole lesson. They could get tired very easily. It would help the writing activity at the end, but it is very time demanding so it would probably have to be finish at home or next lesson. The teacher need to prepare the video before the lesson because then it takes a lot of precious time.
