Worksheet 7

Blog/Log on poetry and visuals

  1. List and briefly describe our class activities on poetry.
  • Snow is hot – a chant for poem that is used for a drama activity, two pupils or two groups of pupils are supposed to read it as a dialogue in different situations or mood (teenagers, sad X cheerful) – good for practising adjectives and it is fun
  • Twistable, turnable man – Shel Silverstein – reading in pairs, one read as much as he or she can on one breath, then they switch. They count the breaths and a pair who read it on fewest breaths, won. Again, an awesome activity for adjectives. Example for fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVSa5gSLf-I
  • Here is the train to Glasgow-Wilma Horsbrugh – a long poem with a special rhythm (train, sleepers). Pupils are divided into groups, every group reads a part, they need to practise together, and the teacher should show the rhythm first.
  • Limerics – we had three limerics mixed together and we unscrambled them. The poems are witty and enjoyable. I’ve tried to write my own, but it was far more difficult than it looks like.

Once I met a man from Tampa

Who believed he’s a black mamba

He Slithered to a deer

that told him: My dear

don’t drink and listen to your mamma

  1. Then either a) evaluate their potential for an ELT classroom, or b) describe an activity you have experienced that served similar purposes.

The potential for lesson is huge. First of all, it is different from typical classroom activities. Everything what we have done, was fun. It means that most if all pupils will be willing to do this. They practise rhythm and pronunciation. They can practise pieces of grammar. Pupils enrich their vocabulary. They practise reading, they cooperate etc.

  1. List some ways in which books may be visually appealing. Whenever you can, please add concrete examples.
  • Striking title (The devil wears Prada, Catch-22)
  • Different texture of cover – 3D – impressed title (Godfather – I have it at home)
  • Colourful and catchy cover
