My feedback to Lenka
Dear Lenka,
I am very grateful that you let me watch your record. It was useful for me because I also have private lessons and just watch it is completely different experience. I admire you for teaching your own family and staying professional for the whole time.
I liked that the lesson was very well constructed. All the activities were logically linked. Since the aims of the lesson were practising listening and modals verbs you found a very good way how to combine it. What I also appreciate is that you always explain rules properly before the activity and assure of understanding, all the listenings had pre-activities and post-activities, you give a chance by listening to listen to it again and do not highlight mistakes, just guide to the right answer. You also avoid a loop talk by giving enough time to think the answer through.
Your student is obviously used to using only English in communication throughout the lesson and also repeating the words after you when you correct him. I am a fan of your game at the end; it was a good after working relaxing activity which was still aimed to modal verbs. You also did not miss a final evaluation and feedback.
There are just a few of my hints that ran through my head during watching your video. Obviously they are according to my teaching style so you do not have to take into consideration.
- You could probably make the lesson more interactive by not giving so much time for preparation. It seemed to me that you lost a lot of precious time on writing all the exercises ahead (before checking). Some of them you could do together and maybe it would give your student more opportunities to practise speaking.
- I would spend more time on pronunciation and from time to time I wound aim it more on the basic vowels and consonants and practise it on those words that are highly repeated in the lesson.
- Since you have the student of intermediate level I would try not to translate him an unknown vocabulary into Czech. I would describe it in English. I find this way more efficient to let the student think about the word, it is easier to remember then. He may certainly say it in Czech at the end to make sure.
It was for me beneficial experience to observe somebody´s teaching. Every day we have something to learn. Thank you and keep being as patient as you were during the whole lesson!
